A New Perspective on ‘Shelter’

Short film (7 min.)

By stripping the audio of its original context, I tried to put it in a more neutral light. Something that is recognizable and relatable for a wider audience but also relates to the situation of the homeless. This way I tried to take away the prejudices and associations people have with homelessness, and leave space for the viewer to form its own opinion.

The image and sound is meant to create a contrast; it opposes or enhances the situation the audio describes. I chose for the cold and empty streets of Tilburg at night, during Christmas, a time known for its warmth and joy of togetherness. By working from the city centre towards the periphery, the viewer is taken on a journey. The vibrance of the city centre transfers to the warmth of the residential areas and slowly turns to the solitude of the industrial area.
